march selection: high school girls by andrea
If you're familiar with Andrea's release Everyone I Love Lives in New Jersey, then you're in for a mini continuation or extension. This works great with Andrea's previous releases but can also be read alone with ease. High School Girls is devoted to growing up and away from friendships. The main one is with Jenny - Andrea's best friend. It is especially touching for girls who have had a similar relationship (mine being with Michelle), but because it is about reminiscing anyone that still thinks about an old friend can relate. It is typewritten, came packaged in a French paper with colored star stickers, and included a few photos. In the back she also listed a few recommendations of books, zines, music, and Philadelphia-based projects. This is a great way to be introduced into her writing.

one shot: 1/8 letter size, 40 pages, comes in a little package
cost: $1.50 ppd or for a trade. Accepting Paypal at email below or well-concealed cash in the mail. Wholesale is $.75 for distros and stores, get in touch for a sample copy.
address: andrea 727 S. 17th Street Philadelphia PA 19146
email: fiveminuteromance@yahoo.com

february selection: mister fujiyama loves you by sheena allen
This cute little mini has some of author Sheena's best work. It's honest, sad, and well written. She highlights her non-fictional feelings like her parents abuse, camera work, love, and snow in the city as if it were fiction. If you've read previous issues of MFLY you will recognize the haiku and her struggles with body image but will wonder how her style grew so suddenly! It is easy to relate to what she says, if only her sadness in losing touch with other zinesters. This is one of the best zines I've read in months.

issue four: 65 mini pages with varied origami colored covers with a special touch
cost: free, trade, donation, or stamp(s) plus a nice letter
address: (until the beginning of may, 2004)
sheena allen 1940 liacouras #110W Philadelphia, PA 19122
website: www.mflyzine.net
email: megwhite@temple.edu for orders, etc.

december selection: root by sarah evans
This Canadian-based zine gives the reader a feeling of country life, even while they're in the city. In the first issue Sarah weaves photographs and a story of her time on an organic co-op over a background of fabrics. It's a thick little quarter-sized issue that I think is actually better than the second. It ends with some quick words on books she's been reading that I've heard are great. The second issue is taller yet thinner, with a brown cover and ribbon binding. This issue is clean typewritten and handwritten with many photographs and vintage images. It is not a single story like issue one, but is varied and more artistic. Sarah focuses on the differences between city and country life, school, being a fresh biologist, and zine work. Both issues are worth looking into, especially for only $1 each. She's on her way around America right now, but is still doing zine orders. You can contact her by email at: sevans@ziplip.com or post for her address

november selection: dirtbag by dave kiersh
i found dirtbag zines online and if you visit the website at http://scottjacoby.freewebtools.com/index.html you can see just how simple yet busy these zines are. of issues four, six, and seven; issue six was probably my favorite. seven has the most writing, but i enjoy looking through the pictures to figure it out myself. dave's style is much like an indie richard scarry - a busy town of girl trouble, bad jobs, and puppetry. each has some color and lots of imagination. short and sweet, and usually $2 each.

check out the site and online catalogue with samples, email the author at davekiersh@aol.com, snail mail at:
568 grandview ave 2nd floor ridgewood, ny 11385
and post here!

the new review forum
this will not be a diary but an information center for kubba zine, as i mentioned in my first post. now you will not only find news updates on the zine, the corresponding web works, and any projects i am working on, but beyond that it is also zine reviews that i hope will become a zine club.

every month there will be a new pick where you can find out what it's like, where to get it, etc. i hope others will expand this by getting the zine or from already reading it, and share their thoughts on it. maybe authors will join in or distros that carry it. this is to promote zine reading and also zine discussion. i'd like to see viewer's zine choices too. anyone can post as little or as often as they'd like.

it began on my website with just one month's selection before i decided to expand. you can view the original page at www.geocities.com/bike_terrorist/reviews.html
also check out the rest of the website with all things kubba, as i mentioned in the introductory post. thank you for stopping and i hope to hear from new readers soon!
